Collagen Gene Variants and Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture in Italian Athletes: A Preliminary Report
نویسندگان
چکیده
Several studies have investigated the role of genetics in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, often returning conflicting results. The present pilot study aimed to analyze association between six Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs1800012; rs12722; rs13946; rs240736; rs970547; and rs4870723, located on COL1A1, COL5A1, COL12A1, COL14A1 genes), ACL among Italian athletes. A hypothesis-driven was conducted. In total, 181 male female athletes (n = 86 injured; n 96 non-injured) were genotyped for prioritized variants. All polymorphisms using PCR RFLP, with only exception being rs1800012 COL1A1 gene, which detected MTPA PCR. allele frequency distribution fell within worldwide range. Despite evident population variability, no selective pressure signals recorded PBS analysis. No significant difference cases controls any SNPs rs970547, rs4870723) included analyses (p > 0.008, Bonferroni-adjusted multiple comparisons). Moreover, differences found when males females assessed separately. Further investigations based a larger sample size are needed, order draw solid conclusions influence collagen genes rupture.

Genetic Variants and Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture: A Systematic Review
BACKGROUND Studies have shown a familial predisposition for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture and have been followed by genetic-association studies on polymorphisms in candidate genes in recent years. To date, no systematic review with a best-evidence synthesis has evaluated the influence of genetics on this devastating knee injury. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to evaluate the associati...
متن کاملAnterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture
The number of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries among young athletes has increased over the past 2 decades. It is currently estimated that 47 per 100,000 boys aged 10 to 19 years will require surgery for an ACL injury each year. Apart from the immediate debilitating effects, there are serious long-term consequences of ACL injuries, including chronic knee instability, cartilage damage, a...
متن کاملAnterior Cruciate Ligament Rupture and Osteoarthritis Progression
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture is a common sporting injury that frequently affects young, athletic patients. Apart from the functional problems of instability, patients with ACL deficient knees also develop osteoarthritis. Although this is frequently cited as an indication for ACL reconstruction, the relationship between ACL rupture, reconstruction and the instigation and progression ...
متن کاملEssentials of anterior cruciate ligament rupture management.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common knee injury and an understanding of current medical knowledge regarding its management is essential. Accurate and prompt diagnosis requires an awareness of injury mechanisms and risk factors, common symptoms and physical/radiologic findings. Early mobilization and physical therapy improves outcomes regardless of treatment modality. Many older...
متن کاملAssociations between Vitamin D Levels and Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury in Male Athletes
Background and purpose: Association between vitamin D and anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACLI) in male athletes is poorly understood, and current data are not sufficient and consistent. The present study investigated the association between vitamin D and ACLI in some Iranian male athletes. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in 100 male athletes with knee pain...
